Terms are important. The meaning I attach to a term and the meaning someone else attaches to it can be vastly different. To resolve this, it is necessary to have an understanding of agreed-upon terms when communicating with people in a new field.
However, rather than taking an approach like memorizing an English dictionary in order to learn a new field, I think what is most important is to learn unfamiliar terms as they come up while actually doing things.
